Hi all,

I'm glad to have the chance of making this report, not only to share those moments with all of you, but for having the chance of giving thanks to some friends who helped us so much:

GFM: kaki, I know you didn't sleep till you knew everything was OK. Without your help, sure it wouldn't have been the same. Long life!!!!

Ivan: your advices and reports were so accurate we almost knew where was each pass, every wave......What a pity, no capitaine, so no chance to use the spanish olive oil!!

Bertram and Nicola: thank you for sharing your master knowledge with us. We had in mind all your words during the trip.

Well, three Canary islanders wanted new experiences and went to Rodrigues Island. And for sure we've got them. I'll try to be brief:

- Booked 6 days: 4 popping and 2 jigging. Finally one of the popping days busted because of the big and dangerous waves near the reef. One of that waves got to the beach and sunk one of the popping boats!!
- Thank you British Airways: our jigging rods arrived four days later.
- The place is known for the rough sea and the always blowing east wind: the first and second day, rough sea and west wind. The rest of the days almost no wind and nice sea conditions.
- Jigging: at the outer bank. Man, this place is awesome: plenty of dogtooth tuna, sharks, GTs, groupers. Hundreds of strikes, jigs almost broken, unstoppable runs..
Most remarkable: around 20 different species, 70 lb GT, 300 lb shark (lost one the captain estimated 400 lb, broke the hook!!), 40 lb red grouper, 60 lb dogtooth, more and more. What about a black marlin? Yes, but after two incredible jumps he went off. One of the most beautiful pictures I've ever seen.
- Popping: at the reef. Two days the fish was a little bit slow. The other day was very agressive, and landed many. Most remakable: GT around 80 lb. We missed more big fish, but we are happy. I even didn't lose a popper. I used a PE8 japanese braided line and a thick 200 lb leader with the unbeatable Midknot. All trebles were barbless and we even could recover one popper the day after.

- I broke mi Saltiga 6000 handle by the knob shaft sad.gif

Hope you enjoyed this. I'll put some pics later if you want.

Thank you

Javi

Finally...some images ! The fish you ask about is a Coral Trout, a popular grouper in the indian ocean, beautiful fish indeed. Nice GTs as well, too bad the picture of Guille's fish does not show it properly, tough to guess the size. I'm glad you had some good time and that the weather treated you well, you lucky bastards biggrin.gif

HI JJ, I sent you a private mail before reading your post, please look at your inbox

Yes, we've been fishing with bluedynamite. I think they have improved their gear very much since you went there. And we know we were very lucky with those conditions. I took a look at the forecast archives and saw that march was the "less bad" month to go with the wind set on 4 Bft, and some days decreasing to 2 or 3.

It's a kind of adventure fishing Rodrigues, and this time we're lucky. Nice place indeed, and nice fishing.

Regards,

Javi

Rodriguez is a little unpredictible... the first time we went in March (04) and we had 3 fantastic days and 3 average days, but we did not lose any day of fishing.
We went back in november (04) and we lost 2 out of the 6 days and we invented quite a few tricks and took some risk to get our lures in teh water for teh remainder of the holyday. Luck is every fishermen best mate! biggrin.gif

Hi Mark,

Just take a look a the WindGuru archives. Rodrigues' best season is between October and April. January, February and March are supposed to be rainy months. February is the month of the cyclones, and the windy season starts at the end of march or so. Surely November is the best choice.
PS: Mark I sent you a PM a week ago. Did you get it? Are you the same Mark from the fishingkaki?

Hi Marko,

The Dumbell popper of the pic was broken by a GT, not a shark. A shark broke one big hook when jigging....
