First of all let me wish you guys a Merry Xmas and happy new year, hope you will enjoy it with your families and have some good fun.
We've just come back from another amazing trip to the Gulf of Chiriquí, better known for its surrounding pieces of rocks named Coiba Island, Montuosa, Ladrones etc. I was there with a group of 8 guys and we fished with Pescapanama, one of the 2 or 3 operations available in the area. These guys are pretty much specialized in casting and jigging, the captain's master, Travis Peterson, is a top water fanatic and he likes to throw big poppers to the Cuberas like you and me. Their knowledge of the better areas for this kind of fishing is limitless, they know every single reef of that immense area and you will never run out of option even if you stay there for one month in a row. We had some fine weather, very scarce wind and some rain in the evening but the fishing has never been compromized. We landed a big amount of Cuberas in the 30 to 50lb range, all of them on top water, a lot of Dorados, Roosterfish and many other occasional and minor catches, even a curious Sailfish. Dropping jigs japanese style we caught a wide array of critters too, mostly Amberjack and Snappers, some good sized too. Mostly everybody was using tackle for GT fishing, landing a Cubera is not an easy task and you better be ready. 8 to 9' rods, Saltigas 6000, Stellas 10000 and braided lines in the 65 to 80lb league. Long mono leaders and a 4 to 6oz poppers. I tested the new 2 piece Lamiglas prototype for GT fishing, is an 8'6" able to cast 6oz and handle at least (this is what I tried so far) 24lb of drag. I will attach a bit of images that i hope you will enjoy.

Nice Bull Dorado on a Popper

Roosta time

Yellowfin on a jig

This is the way the Caranx Medium, a 7' rod that I have designed with Lamiglas, works. Supposedly is a 1 to 3oz rod but she showed some serious attitude landing 3 Cuberas and several Roosterfish, I'm very proud of her.

Nicola,

Congratulation to you and your group for the nice fish you are showing here. Nice rooster, I'd love to catch one of this size.
